He
was born in Belo Horizonte, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Marcus Viana
belongs to an extremely musical family. His father, Sebastião Viana, a
well known conductor, was the assistant of the greatest brazilian composer
Villa Lobos. The home environment did not mean technical musical instruction;
the first attempt of formal piano training (at 10) was not sucessful.
However, when he was 13 he started
taking classes with the hungarian teacher Gabor Buza, a disciple of Carl
Flesh, a great master on violin didatics. He continued his studies at
the university school of music until he was 25.
|
From
1972 to 1973 he lived in Pennsylvania, USA, where he joined the
local orchestra and started his first steps as a composer.
Returning to brazil, he started
taking part in pop music festivals all over Minas Gerais, always
winning the first prizes.

|
He
was always interested in the electrification of the violin, which
was then rare, trying a fusion of classical, rock and brazilian roots.
Music was a passion, but still a hobby;
Marcus attended law school up to 3 years when he decided to participate
in a contest to the symphony orchestra of Minas Gerais, winning first
place. He would remain there for seven years.
His participation in the group Saecula Saeculorum opened the doors
for the progressive rock world; when the band was dismissed he created
two distinct groups which rehearsed more than performed: Ícaro and
Conclave dos Druidas (The Druids Conclave). |
|
In 1979 he started a new project mixing vocal and instrumental music
in the progressive symphonic rock line with emphasis in ecological
and spiritual matters. "Sagrado Coração da Terra" is considered
by the international specialized critics the best progressive latin
american group with five albums on the market (Brazil and Japan).
The success of the Sagrado Coração da Terra attracted the
attention of the "Clube da Esquina" group and Marcus played with
Flavio Venturini, Beto Guedes, Lô Borges and Milton Nascimento from
1979 to 1984 until he recorded his first CD.
Besides being the producer of
his own CDs, Viana makes soudtracks for TV series, films, theater,
children's musicals and ballet. in the publicity area he has received
several prizes as an author of jingles and soudtracks for radio
and TV commercials.

work about the brazilian music from 1845 to 1935, concerning the work of
the great carioca composer "Chiquinha Gonzaga", re-creating musically the
spirit of the times, resulting in a beautiful CD that presents Chiquinha
in a duo of piano and violin with Marcus Viana and Maria Tereza Madeira.
It is with the same pianist that Marcus opens the collection "Brazilian
Masters" which brings in the first volume the work of Chiquinha Gonzaga.
Once more, under the direction of Jayme Monjardim he produces the instrumental
soundtrack of the soap opera "Terra Nostra".
The year of 2000 is filled with work for TV and many CDs. Marcus Viana
